currency

design competition held for the first time in sydney, in november '07 at the metro. 8 finalists head-to-head, wacom-to-wacom with 15 minutes to complete a design brief. this was my piece for the first round which won me the audience prize. the brief was to create a piece with the theme of 'currency' — 15 minutes isn't a long time, but it feels like forever when you're in front of a thousand people. mind-blowing is the only way i can describe the whole event, especially the other contestants, the guys from play and everyone who put this event together who were all absolutely inspiring. video here | info and pics here

technology is rapidly advancing, and once new technologies are introduced, then what happens to the obsolete? instead of being an era of clean production, the introduction of new technologies such as computers and mobile phones has brought upon many harmful elements including lead, mercury, plastics and cadmium – when old technology becomes obsolete and is dumped as land fill, these toxics spill into the land and as a result, our own environments and health are put at risk. australia is one of the largest adopters of new technologies, but while our new technology increases, so does our amount of waste. the problem is right here in our country – and while campaigns already exist on a global scale, none of them specifically target Australia.

this was a hypothetical brief to create an awareness campaign on a chosen environmental issue — this being electronic waste. this included the brand strategy, identity, photography, signage, advertising, and everything else in between.

this project was for the university of western sydney student magazine, Embellish. this was a class project for the subject Publications, where we created a design publication as a team, with each person undertaking different management roles. i was awarded the role of art director and oversaw the whole production and design of the magazine.my design contributions include the cover design, gatefold contents page, 6 page article/spread and masthead. my article, titled the camera never lies deals with the use of manipulated images in the media and its effects on our community space, as well as questions the ethics of designing an image and embellishing the truth to create ideas of a perceived reality. alternate cover design

pizza.jpg

illustration done for the Extra Cheeese group exhibition held in march 07. this piece was sold on opening night, and the exhibition included many other talented friends & artists such as torsocorso, numskull & akina. artists and designers had to create a piece using a used pizza box as the canvas, and its aim was to promote the awareness of sustainable practice, as well as to blur the distinctions between art and design. more info / gallery

alternate cover design for the uws student magazine "embellish" which i art directed in early '07. the magazine's theme was 'subversive space', so i attempted to create something controversial. thus the design was influenced by some of my favourite works — the famous sculptures by allen jones and the work of trevor brown. in the end, my more conservative design was chosen as the cover, but this one still raised quite a few eyebrows. embellish magazine
